Underpinnings

There’s nothing of sadness in the heart of a flower. I am struck by how nothing dims their revelation. Against the dark background of a particularly hard winter, this spring’s flowers shine like gems on velvet. Spring flowers, with their color and gesture, are a timely answer to last year’s sunshine; the underpinning of what we know as “thank you!”
Living and working in the midst of the sleeping plant world, it dawns on me that I know very little about underpinnings. My consciousness, despite all its human refinement, just skims the surface when compared with the depth from which plants draw their unconscious motivation. Yet these underpinnings are the same foundation on which my gratitude is built. There is no wonder that we feel grateful in the presence of spring and all its profound ebullience.
